Last week, Kevin Smith revealed on Instagram that filming would begin for his so-called Jay and Silent Bob Reboot on Monday. Well today’s the day, and sure enough, the Clerks writer and director has been updating his fans on the first day’s progress. But that didn’t stop him from teasing the return of a classic Mallrats character over the weekend — a tease that Smith promptly confirmed today.
“On Monday morning, a [48-year-old] man who’s not even supposed to be here today will sneak up into the attic and play with all his favorite toys again,” Smith wrote in his Saturday post. The text accompanied a photo from the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot set, specifically the “Brodie’s Secret Stash” mall store.
That’s right, folks. None other than Brodie Bruce, the character played by actor Jason Lee in Mallrats and later in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, will be featured in the new film. Smith confirmed the numerous hints and hashtags he left in Saturday’s post with a subsequent image of himself, Lee and Jason Mewes on Monday:
“I couldn’t think of a better scene with which to start the shoot than the return to the Mall with Brodie Bruce. The three of us gathered for a couple hours last night to run the lines and realized we first rehearsed together waaaaay back in the mid-90’s. It may be 24 years later and we may have 6 kids between us, but Jay, Lee and me partied like it was 1995, giggling while adding jokes and finding inflections.”
The post pictured the trio posing in front of a display case, presumably in Brodie’s store, idolizing the late Marvel Comics figurehead Stan Lee.
