This Halloween is the 10th anniversary of Saw, and Screen Junkies’ Honest Trailers has tackled the supposed granddaddy of “torture porn” with the usual flair.
The trailer lampoons Saw’s low production value and bad acting from the film’s own screenwriter, but the best part is a montage of the ridiculously gory bits from all the subsequent sequels. Heads are crushed with ice blocks, bodies are torn apart, and a face is ripped open by the infamous reverse bear trap.
My one disappointment is that the narrator never addresses Jigsaw’s supposed morals and his code. These movies insist that Jigsaw never kills anyone and that he does what he does for a greater good, but does anyone actually believe that? In Saw VI, six people are strapped to a carousel, and the test will only allow two people to live, at most. Jigsaw is trying to teach these people a lesson, but he is also unnecessarily killing a whole lot of people to do it. If the saying is that you can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs, then Jigsaw is making an omelet by smashing the whole carton, driving out to the farm, slaughtering the chickens, and slapping around the farmer for good measure.
