Andreas Athanasiou is a 20-year-old Red Wings prospect currently playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. On Tuesday night, he showcased some moves in a spectacular goal that, if he wasn’t already, should surely put him on the radar of the NHL and its fans.
Notice how quickly he gains possession of a loose puck from behind the blue line and races down the ice, quickly disposes of a single defenseman, regains control of the puck and in a split second beats a diving goalie with a beautiful backhand. The amount of skill and concentration it took for that three-second highlight to end with a goal shows Athanasiou may not be long for minor-league hockey.
