Paul McCartney Says Working With Kanye West Reminds Him Of John Lennon

The meeting of legendary rock icon Paul McCartney and rapper/producer/designer/speaker/cobbler Kanye West has been truly great to witness. Between ‘Ye outright asking Paul what pussy was like in the ’60s and, you know, the music they’ve made like “FourFiveSeconds” and “Only One,” it’s all been pretty fruitful. But we had no idea how close the two actually were. In an interview with the Sun as reported by the Mirror, Sir Paul mentioned that writing with Kanye was similar to writing with his former Beatles bandmate John Lennon:

“When I wrote with John, he would sit down with a guitar. I would sit down. We’d ping-pong till we had a song. It was like that.”

Kanye probably took the statement in stride. He’s not one to let that kind of thing inflate his ego. In addition to the flattering comparison, Paul mentioned how the two bonded while writing songs for their respective moms:

“‘We sat around and talked an awful lot just to break the ice,’ he said. ‘One of the stories I told him was about how I happened to have written ‘Let It Be.’ My mum came to me in a dream when she’d died years previously. I was in a bit of a state — it was the Sixties and I was overdoing it. In the dream she said, ‘Don’t worry it’s all going to be fine, just let it be.’ And I woke up and thought, ‘Woah’ and wrote the song. I told Kanye this and he said, ‘I’m going to write a song with my mum.’ So then I sat down at the piano.”

What a time to be alive when these two can write songs where apparitions visit them to make No. 1 hits. We can only hope this pairing gets along famously and doesn’t eventually snipe each other in musical form. Mainly because Kanye would probably destroy Paul on a diss track.
