During the Republican National Convention, a mother to one of the Americans killed in the Benghazi attack said that she personally blamed her son’s death on Hillary Clinton. This is despite the fact that the House Select Committee on Benghazi found no specific wrongdoing by Clinton after a $7 million investigation. Now and after the convention has ended, the mother to Ambassador Christopher Stevens, who was also killed in the attack, strongly objects to how Republicans have been using her son’s name for political gain.
Ambassador Stevens’ mother, Mary F. Commanday, made her objection in a forthright manner by writing a letter to the editor in the New York Times:
As Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens’s mother, I am writing to object to any mention of his name and death in Benghazi, Libya, by Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican Party.
I know for certain that Chris would not have wanted his name or memory used in that connection. I hope that there will be an immediate and permanent stop to this opportunistic and cynical use by the campaign.
What’s interesting is that Commanday isn’t specifically defending Clinton here, or weighing in on what she thinks happened or who is responsible for it. She is however implying what she thinks of Donald Trump, and what her son would think of him, in a classy but impactful way. The RNC is over, but maybe after seeing this, Trump will stop mentioning Stevens on Twitter like in the example below:
If you want to know about Hillary Clinton's honesty & judgment, ask the family of Ambassador Stevens.
