Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein has rapidly racked up the dough necessary in her general election recount push and now she’s found a willing high-profile participant in the process: Hillary Clinton‘s campaign team.
Marc Elias, general counsel for Clinton’s campaign, wrote about the current recount attempt headed by Stein in a piece on Medium. Theories have emerged following President-elect Donald Trump’s win suggesting that foul play may have been a factor in the voting process in vital swing states, although Elias notes that his camp’s investigation has not uncovered anything pointing to sabotage.
“It should go without saying that we take these concerns extremely seriously,” writes Elias in the piece. “We certainly understand the heartbreak felt by so many who worked so hard to elect Hillary Clinton, and it is a fundamental principle of our democracy to ensure that every vote is properly counted.”
The push for recounts has been done under the banner of ensuring fair voting results no matter the outcome, although it’s not unreasonable to imagine viewpoints may differ depending on political affiliation. According to Elias, the campaign will participate in the process in the states Stein chooses to move forward in.
“Because we had not uncovered any actionable evidence of hacking or outside attempts to alter the voting technology, we had not planned to exercise this option ourselves, but now that a recount has been initiated in Wisconsin, we intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides,” says Elias. “If Jill Stein follows through as she has promised and pursues recounts in Pennsylvania and Michigan, we will take the same approach in those states as well.”
At present, Hillary Clinton holds a multimillion vote lead over Donald Trump in the popular vote, but that’s rendered academic by the Electoral College.
