Samsung can’t seem to catch a break lately as the company announced it is recalling 2.8 million washing machines for an explosion risk. This comes on the heels of the company’s Galaxy Note 7 smartphones being recalled for also exploding.
The company announced the recall after complaints, which indicated how the washing machines’ lids could pop off violently during a wash cycle. Samsung said this could occur if bedding, bulky, or water-resistant items are being washed at a high speed. In addition, the drums could possibly come loose, leading to more vibrations and flying lids. The recall involved nearly 2.8 million washers that were sold between March 2011 and November 2016.
Some customers report a frightening severity to these explosions. CNN Money reveals how one customer said the lid “exploded with such ferocity that it penetrated the interior wall of her garage.” Samsung it is offering their customers a free in-home repair, with a year warranty or a rebate to buy a new washer from the company or another. And to try to earn some goodwill, they will toss in $150 for the next washer.
This latest episode is another woe for the brand this year. The world’s biggest smartphone maker had to recall approximately 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7s after the phones posed their own explosion risk. The company may be ready for a fresh start in 2017, although brand damage will be even harder to repair than the products themselves.
