The Houston Rockets finished off their first round series against the Dallas Mavericks in decisive fashion at home on Tuesday night, with a 103-94 win that didn’t feel as close as the final score. As James Harden, Dwight Howard and company put the finishing touches on the game, the Houston Rockets’ official Twitter account sent out the above tweet, which was not a good look for them. They’ve since deleted the tweet.
Checking the boxes for online outrage, we have references to: 1) Gun violence, 2) Violence against animals, 3) Reckless emoji use, and 4) Trolling. It’s a little icky, but it was also done at a very emotional moment for Houston, since the Rockets just advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals for the first time since the 2008-09 season. The Mavericks’ Twitter account handled it just about as well as one could hope, considering they were probably already hurting from the loss:
@HoustonRockets Not very classy but we still wish you guys the best of luck in the next round.

Other people were not as diplomatic, as one might expect:
The Rockets should be eliminated for this tweet https://t.co/zN4eQtMcCo

The Houston Rockets may have just sent the most mind-blowing tweet ever sent by a professional sports team. https://t.co/k4Yw1ePzY1

Utah radio host Scott Garrard wins the “Correct Take” award:

Because sure enough, just a few minutes later, the apology came:

Just remember, Twitter is not the right place to be when you’re on either end of the emotional spectrum. It’s never your most eloquent moment.
