Fred Hoiberg Doesn’t Think Derrick Rose Needs Rest This Season

Derrick Rose played in just 51 games last season. The season before that, he played in 10 – due to a torn right meniscus – and before that he missed an entire season after tearing his ACL in 2011. Suffice it to say, he’s had a rough go of things lately.

Last season, Rose at times looked like his old self, but more often than not, still appeared to lack his signature explosiveness and athleticism. He played not like a 26-year-old, but a 32-year-old, and not a gracefully aged one at that. This season, though, should be different, at least according to his new coach, Fred Hoiberg.

Does this mean Rose will play all 82 games? Probably not. Even though Rose has his explosiveness now, it may not sustain after 60 or so games. He’ll get his much-needed breathers every now and then, but the Bulls probably won’t have him on a schedule like the San Antonio Spurs do their stars.

It’s been too long since we’ve seen the Derrick Rose of old. There were glimpses of him in last year’s playoffs, and now that he’s had a full summer of rest under his belt, we should expect more of the same when the season starts.
