The Golden State Warriors’ historic run is still before us, but it’s possible that its highest peak has already been seen. On the eve of Game 6 of the NBA Finals Thursday night, Golden State has already completed the extremely improbable in their journey toward a second-straight championship.
“If we win [the championship], that will be the game we remember,” Golden State forward Harrison Barnes says in a new Sports Illustrated story. He’s talking about their unforgettable victory in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals, a 108-101 comeback effort on the road against the Oklahoma City Thunder, who were mere minutes from silencing the Warriors. “That will be the best game of any of our lives.”
The story recounts many details of the historic game, and notes that going into it, only nine out of 232 teams down 3-1 in a series had ever come back to win it. The Warriors, behind Klay Thompson’s brilliant fourth quarter, now make for the tenth.
They’ll have to play their best game in Cleveland to close out the series and prevent LeBron James and the Cavaliers from having the chance to make history as the eleventh team to complete that feat, in a potential Game 7. Draymond Green’s return to action shouldn’t hurt.
