John Legend is able to incorporate the perfect amount of soul into any song he sings, whether he wrote it or not. This we know. He is also allowed to do that to any song because he has the voice of an angel, but if the voice of an angel could be bottled up and mixed with smooth molasses. Tonight, he unleashed that voice on a national audience by performing the National Anthem ahead of Game 1 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors. As could be expected, it was a slow and – dare we say – sexy version of our country’s signature song. Should the National Anthem be sexy? John Legend scoffs at that question and does it anyway, and people online couldn’t get enough of the performance.
How did John Legend just turn a song about a naval bombardment in the War of 1812 into a song you can make a baby to

I need John Legend to sing something every day. I don't care what it is. Sing the ingredients on your box of cereal, just let me hear it.

That last tweet is, of course, a nod towards all of the incredibly unfair criticism that Chrissy Teigen has received for doing normal adult things like “going out to dinner” and “heading to the store” in the weeks after she gave birth to her and Legend’s first child together. There was no sign of the baby in Oracle Arena, but we assume that’s because she already gets enough of John’s melodic and perfect voice at home during lullaby time and they don’t want to spoil such a young child with such a precious gift.
