Kelly Oubre Jr. will miss Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals between the Boston Celtics and the Washington Wizards after he got a bit too physical with Kelly Olynyk in Game 3.
The NBA suspended Oubre Jr. on Saturday after he got into it with Olynyk as the result of a hard foul on offense. NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Kiki VanDeWeghe announced Oubre Jr.’s one-game suspension for “charging and making forceful and unwarranted contact” with Olynyk.
The incident occurred with Washington up 21 in the second quarter of Game 3. Olynyk set a hard pick on Oubre Jr. with 9:12 left in the quarter. Olynyk was called for an offensive foul on the play, but that wasn’t enough for Oubre Jr., who rushed over to Olynyk and gave him a short, sharp shove that got him ejected and called out by Evan Turner on Twitter.
The Wizards went on to win, 116-89, but Oubre Jr. was given a flagrant 2 and ejected from the game. Now he’ll sit out another one.
Olynyk has gotten very good at agitating his opponent this postseason. He pulled off a nice armbar against Robin Lopez and the Chicago Bulls in the first round. It was very similar to the move that injured Kevin Love two seasons ago, though officials missed both of those calls. They got Olynyk for the moving screen on Thursday, but that wasn’t enough for Oubre. Now he and the Wizards pay the price.
