Kevin Love’s Sarcastic Quip Inadvertently Fueled Speculation The Cavs Might Trade him

Add this one to the never-ending annals of Cleveland Cavaliers melodrama. The franchise apparently held some sort of contest for a lucky fan to become “general manager for the day,” a process that certain teams around the NBA might as well use to select their actual GMs, given their organizational dysfunction.

So of course an offhanded comment from Kevin Love jokingly asking the faux GM not to trade him is only going to add to the already rampant speculation about his future with the franchise.

ESPN.com’s Zach Lowe wrote in his column Tuesday about something everybody already assumed, i.e. that Cleveland’s front office came very close to shipping Love to Boston at the trade deadline:

Cleveland and Boston had trade talks for Love at the deadline, though they died with Boston offering a low-ball package the Cavs wouldn’t consider, according to several league sources. Even if Boston’s interest has faded, someone will call Cleveland about Love around the draft.

Whether they answer that call will largely depend on how the season plays out. Despite holding the top spot in the Eastern Conference, they simply don’t look like a team that could challenge the Warriors or Spurs in a seven-game series. It’s also clear that LeBron recognizes this reality, given his moodiness and questionable behavior lately. He and Love have never gelled on or off the court, so Love’s days with the franchise may already be numbered, regardless of whether he wants to stay.
