Steven Adams is one of the toughest players in the league. A Vince Carter elbow to the head? He just keeps walking. Nick Young elbows him in the throat? No reaction. He may as well be impervious to pain. I mean, the guy fractured his hand and still shot the free throw afterwards.
Yet while Adams is never one to shy away from physical contact, he still knows to stay away from some players. No. not because of what they’ll do, but because of what they’ll say. As he told Anthony Slater of The Oklahoman:
“KG and (Kendrick Perkins), those two are ridiculous,” Adams said of the legendary smack-talkers. “They make you question, like, why you are playing basketball and stuff. You’re like ‘Why am I doing this?’ It’s really weird, you get depressed.”
Kevin Garnett’s renowned for his trash-talking, and maybe even more so for talking to himself. Whether it’s a tactic or Garnett is actually just crazy is unknown, but Adams wants no part that sort of lunacy.
“I walk away so I don’t hear it because then, I don’t know, I’ll get real sad.”
It’s clear KG will do just about anything to throw an opponent off his game, and that might even mean an existential crisis. He’s capable of looking you in the eye and with one small quip, he’ll tear apart your very soul. Playing against KG is like breaking up with your beau and listening to The Smiths for 48 minutes.
We’re guessing KG wouldn’t have it any other way.
