Back in 2013, Disney announced that EA would be producing all Star Wars video games going forward, and the publisher has really run with it. So far only Star Wars Battlefront has hit shelves, but new Star Wars titles from Visceral Games (Dead Space) and BioWare (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) are on the way, and the company just announced an all-new project.
According to EA, Respawn Entertainment is now working on a Star Wars game. Respawn was founded by Jason West and Vince Zampella, who previously set up Infinity Ward at Activision and created the Call of Duty series. After a falling out with Activision, West and Zampella aligned themselves with EA, where they produced the hit multiplayer shooter Titanfall.
But that’s not all! Respawn’s new Star Wars game will be headed up by Stig Asmussen, a key mind behind the God of War series. Asmussen talked a bit about his Star Wars gig in a new blog post.
“For me, just typing these words is surreal. I have been playing Star Wars games my whole life, now I get to make a Star Wars game. But it’s not all fun and games — we promise to pay respect to the Star Wars legacy at all times, a fact that will be constantly reinforced and honored as a central game design tenet. Moving forward, we couldn’t ask for a better universe in which to continue this journey, and although I would love to share all of the exciting places we are going, we have the following piece of information to divulge with you all today: We’ll be making a third-person action-adventure game set in the Star Wars universe.
Now, I understand on the surface this might sound a bit dry, but developing a game within the ever-expanding Star Wars universe opens up so many paths for us to go down, and an unparalleled playground to design within. We have already planted the seeds by assembling a small, but incredibly talented team, ready for the amazing journey that lies ahead. With this in mind we are looking to expand the dream.”
Right now, the “third-person action-adventure” descriptor is all we know about Respawn’s game, but that tidbit says quite a bit. This game won’t be a shooter or multiplayer-focused, as you might expect given Respawn’s history. It sounds like it will be more along the lines of God of War – an action-packed lightsaber hack ‘n’ slash perhaps? I suppose we’ll have to wait to find out.
Excited for Respawn’s Star Wars project? What kind of game do you think it might be?
