Warning: The following article may contain Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End spoilers.
Thus far, Sony and developer Naughty Dog have managed to keep the flow of information about Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End pretty tightly under control. We know the game is about Nathan Drake and his long-lost brother Sam looking for pirate treasure, and we’ve seen good chunks of gameplay from two areas (a bustling city and the countryside of Madagascar), but otherwise, we don’t know too much about how the game will play out. Well, we may know a little bit more now.
A couple weeks back, Naughty Dog hosted a presentation at GDC, showing off some of the technical tricks they used to build the world of Uncharted 4. During the presentation, Naughty Dog artist Andrew Maximov delved into the nuts and bolts of the game using a variety of debug menus, one of which may have revealed more than the developer intended. The menu in question only shows up for a split second during a nearly hour-long video, but it appears to be a master list of the game’s stages.
The list is a little hard to make out, but these appear to be the game’s levels, in order:
Boat Intro, Orphanage, Prison, Dive, Home, The Prison, Auction, Scotland, Madagascar, City, Open Water, Island, Colony, Manor, River, Sunken Ruins, Passage, Ship-Graveyard, Cave, and Epilogue.
Obviously, there are no detailed plot specifics here, but the list does give us a sense of the game’s overall flow, and hints at some stuff Sony and Naughty Dog haven’t revealed yet. Seems like the game will have a fairly extensive intro, with Nathan and Sam having some youthful adventures at the orphanage, possibly followed by a level where Sam has to escape from prison. From there, we head to an auction and Scotland. What might be happening in those levels, I’m not sure. The areas we’ve seen, the City and Madagascar, are from smack in the middle of Uncharted 4, with a lengthy series of adventures on the lost pirate island/colony of Libertalia taking up the last half of the game. No real hints about how it all ends, except that Nathan Drake’s adventures are apparently going to end in some sort of cave. Which seems appropriate.
What do you think these level names might hint at? What might happen in that cave? Speculate to your heart’s content, below.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End arrives May 10.
