We still don’t know who’s going to be playing Supergirl in CBS’ upcoming TV series (although let’s keep our fingers crossed for Gemma Atkinson), but CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler revealed a surprising amount about the show during a recent press tour.
First off, Supergirl, just like everything else on CBS that’s not a Chuck Lorre comedy, will be a crime procedural with some light story-arcs…
“There will be crime cases, but what [executive producers] Ali Adler and Greg Berlanti pitched was a real series arc for her. The beauty of it is now with shows like Good Wife and Madam Secretary, you can have serialized story elements woven into a case of the week. She’s a crime solver, so she’s going to have to solve a crime. She’s going to get a bad guy.”
Crime, guys, crime! She’s going to solve so many crimes!
Oh, and sounds like Supergirl’s classic characterization as a teenage orphan from a distant planet is right out. Here’s how Tassler described CBS’ Supergirl…
“A very strong, independent young woman. She’s coming into her own. She’s dealing with family issues. She’s dealing with work issues. It’s a female empowerment story. If you look at the strong female characters we have on the air, it really is resonant of that.”
That family issues comment certainly makes it sound like this Supergirl isn’t from Krypton. That said, not all the superhero stuff has been left by the wayside — she’ll probably still have powers of some kind.
“It’s her intellect, it’s her skill, it’s her smarts. It’s all of those elements. It’s not just her strength, which she does have.”
And there will be a costume, designed by the guy who did the costumes for Arrow and The Flash.
“We have seen the costume. Awesome costume.”
Hmmm, and who was wearing that costume? C’mon Tassler, spill it!
I guess I could get all bent out of shape about them seemingly breaking from the comics somewhat, but let’s be brutally honest – Supergirl has never been a (ahem) super compelling character. She could probably do with a few tweaks, so long as this doesn’t entirely turn into CSI: Metropolis.
