“I’ll cause a distraction, then we’ll run away together to Fox.”
Joss Whedon made his name bringing strong, interesting female characters to the screen, but since landing his gig as master of The Avengers, he’s struggled to bring some level of gender equality to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Avengers featured only one major female hero in Black Window, and Avengers: Age of Ultron continues to play conservatively, adding one new female character in Scarlet Witch alongside two new male characters in Quicksilver and Vision.
Talking to Digital Spy, Whedon let his frustration over the situation boil over a bit…
“There is genuine, recalcitrant, intractable sexism, and old-fashioned quiet misogyny that goes on. You hear ‘Oh, female superheroes don’t work because of these two bad ones that were made eight years ago’. There’s always an excuse.”
Whedon then raised the question many of us have asked – if female superheroes are so troublesome and unworkable, how do you explain The Hunger Games?
“Hunger Games is a different structure and aesthetic to a certain extent, but these narratives where people are bigger than life and they’re in these terrible, heightened circumstances, it’s all part of the same genre.”
Finally Whedon essentially confirmed something I’d always suspected – he’d rather be making X-Men movies.
“Marvel is in a position of making a statement simply by making [a female-led] movie, which I think would be a good thing to do. But it has to be a good movie, it has to be a good character, and most of the best characters in Marvel are owned by Fox, let’s face it!”
