When Sony signed an agreement to allow Spider-Man to return to Marvel for a new slate of films and appearances in the other Marvel films, you knew fans would start to let their imaginations run wild. What other deals could be made, what other characters could appear, will we finally get one of those big crossover films? Who knows. Fox holds a vice grip on the X-Men characters, but that doesn’t mean the filmmakers behind the movies aren’t trying to make something happen.
Tim Miller and Simon Kinberg dropped plenty of wishes during the Deadpool Blu Ray press event, with their biggest having to deal with getting Spider-Man and Deadpool together on the big screen. It’s big because both are likely two of the most popular Marvel characters of all time teaming up, but it’s also an attempt to bridge three companies together for one cause. According to ComicBook.com, Miller is all about “building bridges” and would love to have at least a brief visit between the characters:
“With all of the deals that have recently started happening, we asked if they could get visitation rights to Sony‘s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man,” Kinberg added, laughing, “I would love to see it. Both of us are close with [Marvel’s] Kevin [Feige], we respect and love Kevin. If it were even remotely possible, we will find a way ’cause we’d would love to see it.”
Both expanded these desires to the larger Marvel and X-Men universes, wanting to create the massive film that fans are likely clamoring for between the team of mutants and Marvel’s Avengers:
“I would love to, someday, in part heal the rift between the world of X-Men and the world of Avengers,” Miller said of the possibility. His film, Deadpool, is the highest grossing X-Men movie of all time, and the character gets more apparent support from Marvel Entertainment than most X-Men do.
“I think we all would, yeah,” Kinberg added. “There’s so much crossover in the comics, it would be neat to one day see those characters share a movie. It would be fun to all team-up one day, somehow, together if that could work.”
Would it ever be a possibility? It’s certainly not the first time that several studios have come together to share their characters in one film. Look at something like Roger Rabbit, bringing Disney, Warner Bros, and several other companies together in one film. Creating a one off film between all of Marvel’s major characters makes a bit more sense than seeing something happen between Marvel and DC Comics on the big screen. It doesn’t even need to make sense, just have something happen.
Spider-Man and Daredevil would certainly be easier, since having a bunch of actors from multiple films appear in one movie is already hard enough — looking at you, Infinity War. I think it’s also the crossover that makes the most sense given Deadpool’s nature with the fourth wall.
Make it happen, people. It’s a license to print money.
