Sorry to have to break this news to you, The Matrix Reloaded, but we swear it’s true. Deadpool has officially beaten your R-rated movie box office record from over a decade ago. As of today, Marvel’s mouthy superhero who doesn’t have a care in the world when it comes to being appropriate or looking a little bit fat in spandex has grossed $4 million more at the global box office than the first Matrix sequel. In a complete surprise, the movie came out of the gate strong with a record breaking weekend and hasn’t slowed down from there. Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Deadpool is a favorite with fans, so even though critics had their doubts about how hard it would hit, the continued success months after its release date shouldn’t be a complete shocker.
It looks like the great foundation the movie laid with hilarious Christmas marketing and cheeky billboards only helped the longevity of its box office grosses. For ever sexy fireplace photo, there was a million more dollars in Marvel’s coffers. Plus, he didn’t even have to host SNL to do it! The work isn’t over yet though. Even though Deadpool has conquered the global box office, the record for highest rated domestic film is still yet to be achieved. It is still possible for Deadpool to get there though, but it won’t be a slam dunk. The Passion of the Christ is only $21M away at this point, so it’s still realistic for one jerk who swears a lot to overtake a film directed by another jerk who swears a lot. If that happens? Chimichangas for everyone!
