Suicide Squad may not have been a hit with critics, but pretty much everyone can agree Harley Quinn was a major highlight of the movie. Margot Robbie’s villain helped propel Suicide Squad to a record-breaking opening weekend, and more favorable reviews from women than men, so it’s hardly shocking to learn that Gotham is looking to get in on the Harley Quinn fun.
When asked if any Suicide Squad villains would be showing up on the Batman prequel, producer John Stephens had this to say:
“We’ll be seeing proto-versions of some of those characters. We’ll see a proto Killer Croc version. And we’ll be seeing a character, perhaps not this season but in times to come, who can be a forerunner of Harley Quinn, which will be fun.”
Harley’s frequent partner-in-crime Poison Ivy just received a sexy aging-up, so we expect whoever’s cast as Harley to be around the same age for team-up purposes. Of course, there’s no Harley Quinn without The Joker, and Stephens did some more teasing about what they’re planning for the Clown Prince of Crime.
“We really imagined developing the myth of the Joker at the same time as we develop the myth of Batman. We wanted to stretch that over multiple seasons. So in the course of this year, we’re going to see how the cult of the Joker is going to extend and deepen and change this year. We have these underground movements that have started to talk about Jerome and what he represented and how he’s going to come back, setting the stage for perhaps, if Fox gives us a season four, hopefully we’ll bring that back in a much bigger way and you’ll see these other versions of the Joker myth with Jerome and with other characters.”
So no, still no answers as to whether Jerome is the damn Joker or not. But hey, stay tuned to a season four that may or may not exist to maybe find out!
Gotham season three arrive Sept. 18 on Fox.
