DC’s strategy for building a shared universe is much, much different from Marvel’s. Instead of heroes being contained in their own discreet franchises and only teaming up when an event movie demands it, DC, right off the bat, is throwing together heroes even in their own solo movies. The Flash, for example, is going to team up the Scarlet Speedster with Vic Stone himself, Cyborg.
Deborah Snyder, one of the architects behind the upcoming DC movies, talked about the various tones the movies will have, and revealed something about The Flash in the process:
David Ayer’s Suicide Squad has such an amazing, brash tone. It’s fun and it’s about the villains, and it’s super-different than Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, which is an origin story and tells her story. As you can imagine, when we get to the Flash movie, Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher — who plays Cyborg — are kind of our youngest characters, and they have a really nice comradery [sic] with each other. Ezra is super funny, so the tone of that film will be very different than the rest of them.
That The Flash was going to be a bit lighter isn’t really a surprise. Warner Bros. recruited Phil Lord and Chris Miller of The Lego Movie and Jump Street franchise fame to write the script, and Seth Grahame-Smith, who’s also writing The Lego Batman Movie, is directing. But Cyborg and Flash teaming up is an interesting choice; while Cyborg is buddies with a Flash, he’s usually friends with Wally West, a side effect of their time spent on the Teen Titans. Then again, it’s hard to turn down a superhero buddy comedy. We’ll see which of the two is too old for this sh*t in 2018.
