Geeks of a certain age will remember a time when the idea of a Venom movie was something spoken about in excited yelps. For the bulk of those optimistic about the Marvel villain’s spot on the big screen, the dream sorta took a hit after hanging out with the version they got in Spider-Man 3. Well, it looks like the sinister symbiote is getting another crack at motion picture glory.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Sony’s got plans for Venom. Big plans. Not only is a Venom movie apparently on the way, but the would-be franchise would also be its own entity that’s unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland as our new Webhead. Seeing as Spidey’s earmarked for business in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s not entirely startling that a Venom film would have to navigate around the behind-the-scenes stuff going on with his arch-nemesis.
How far along is this thing? Well, it hasn’t been revealed who the studio has in mind as a director or a lead just yet, but THR reports that Dante Harper (of Edge of Tomorrow rewrite fame) is the man tasked with the script. Everything else seems to either be shrouded in mystery or just not determined as of yet. Is pasty pro graps fella Sheamus still itching for to take on the role? Will Carnage pop in for a friendly howdy? Can today’s technology manage to give Venom a tongue that doesn’t look so damn goofy in a movie? All these questions will presumably be revealed provided the promise of a Venom spin-off finally gets to the release stage.
