In her “Let Me Down” video, English singer Jorja Smith gives strong Red Sparrow vibes as a contract killer who makes the mistake of falling for her target, a dancer.
The dramatically-shot, Hector Dockrill-directed short thriller follows Smith as she cases her victim, engages in a heated affair, and debates finishing the job, all while being pushed and observed by a mysterious foreigner. In the end, the shot caller who ordered the hit turns out to be Stormzy (who’s developing into quite the thespian), although the video never quite reveals exactly why the UK grime up-and-comer‘s character has it in for the dancer in the first place. One can only assume he owed Stormzy a lot of money.
Smith has been on the rise for the last year or so after her single “Blue Lights” became an international success and brought her to the attention of Drake, who put her on his More Life “playlist,” on the song “Get It Together.” The Toronto rapper even popped up during Smith’s concert in his hometown to show his support and perform their hit with her. It’s no wonder he’s so enchanted; with her penchant for cinematic visuals, not to mention her hauntingly soulful voice, Smith has already shown glimpses of a global star in the making.
