Only a chosen few of us can walk on the moon at the moment, but that won’t stop people from trying to at least simulate the feeling of walking on the tide-controlling planetoid in the sky. The latest attempt is the most unusual: The MoonWalkers, shoes that try to stand up against gravity.
How? Magnets. The insole of the shoe, developed by startup Moonshine Crea, is lined with neodymium magnets, lined up exactly with magnets at the bottom of the sole, with the north poles aligned towards each other. As we all know, magnets with similar polarity push against each other, so technically you’re “floating” within the shoe. And, of course, there’s a comfy memory foam sole and a breathable fabric upper. If that’s not quite flashy enough for you, the shoe will have e-paper built into it with certain models so you can scroll your tweets on the side of your feet. The sole, of course, is designed to look like a moon boot, so you can leave behind your mark.
The result may look a bit chunky to some, but then, you’re packing a lot of stuff into a small space. Also, for $140 to $200, let’s face it, you can spend a lot more on shoes that don’t have technology in them. Besides, if nothing else, you know you’ve got a great conversation starter on your feet.
