There were unconfirmed rumors and stirrings back in September involving the return of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass to the Bourne franchise in 2016. It wasn’t a sure thing then, but it certainly felt sure enough to prepare for a new film.
Well now that news is confirmed by Matt Damon himself. Well actually, it was mentioned by Ben Affleck and then confirmed after he finished spilling the beans. From E!:
“Well, [Damon’s] going to be doing a Bourne movie next fall when I’ve just completely lost any semblance of physical fitness. So….,” Affleck told E! News exclusively.
Did Affleck just say what we think he said? Oh yes, he did!
“Yes, next year,” Damon responded to E! News when asked for clarification. “It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. [Director] Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.”
The revelation came on the red carpet for Project Greenlight’s resurrected fourth season and you can see video of the “announcement” on the E! web site (if you would dare tread such murky waters alone).
Another Bourne with Matt Damon seems like a cool idea, but everything seems like a cool idea these days. I liked the original set of movies, so I guess that’s enough to want more. I’m just dying for a new take on it. Maybe he could be navigate his way through cooking school or work at a Costco? That’d be more interesting than whatever solemn remote fishing village they hunt him down in and force him back into action. Rambo already did it and did it better!
