Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn’s name has been mentioned several times in conjunction with Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Star Wars anthology film, Star Wars: Rogue One. Early reports suggested that he was going to play the movie’s villain, and when our own Mike Ryan asked him about it back in April, the actor welcomed the speculation but never said it was anything more than a rumor.
And it has stayed that way ever since. Lucasfilm has announced a few other castings, but Mendelsohn’s name has never been confirmed. When Deadline caught up with the Bloodline actor, however, he seemed a bit more willing to discuss it:
I know that it’s something that’s being talked about. That’s what I definitely know. I’m waiting for them to call me and say, “Hey, here’s the start date,” but you know, none of that’s yet taken place, but you know I’d be very happy to do it, let’s put it that way.
Wait a minute. So Mendelsohn’s not in Star Wars: Rogue One, and the rumors that came out a few months ago were nothing more than pure speculation. Yet now it seems it’s “being talked about.”
Whatever, I don’t care if it’s all only rumors, smoke and mirrors or outright lying. Please just cast Mendelsohn as the anthology film’s villain.
