In early January, Star Wars: The Force Awakens made history when it became the top-grossing movie of all time at the North American box office. Yet with an entire global box office to dominate and Avatar‘s seemingly insurmountable records standing before it, would the latest entry in the Star Wars saga ever earn the highest spot in the world? BB-8 and friends haven’t rolled that high quite yet, but there’s a good chance they’ll cross the $2 billion mark by the end of the week.
Variety reports that The Force Awakens‘ domestic total currently sits at $895.4 million after a successful third-place seventh weekend at the U.S. box office. Internationally, however, the film finished in fourth place over the weekend with a mere total gross of $1.1 billion. This still puts it behind the seventh-week global standings of Avatar (obviously), Titanic and Furious 7. Yet the finish line for the race to reach $2 billion globally is within $17 million.
Considering the movie’s totals for week seven ($23.4 million), it isn’t hard to imagine that The Force Awakens will reach $2 billion when the last ticket is sold on Sunday. Of course, this all depends on whether Finn and Poe Dameron can quit staring into each other’s eyes long enough to help their feature earn enough money at the worldwide box office.
