Shazam wasn’t very high on many people’s superhero hype meters, but that was before Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson signed on. Not as the titular DC hero, but as his nemesis, Black Adam. With Johnson talking up the franchise and his role as something that could have major implications in the DC movie universe, more people are starting to pay attention.
The hype has gotten so hot that Johnson says the movie’s release schedule may be moved up, according to /Film:
I’ve been preparing for Black Adam for eight years. Eight years! So I’m happy that we’re continuing to work on the script, the script keeps coming in and is better and better. Going into a movie and a hopeful franchise like a Black Adam/Shazam, you gotta take your time with it….No, I don’t think it’s going to be that far away. It’s going to be earlier than that. I don’t think 2019.
Note that The Rock called it a “Black Adam/Shazam” franchise. Is this a hint that Shazam will be overshadowed by the villain? Considering The Rock’s enthusiasm for the Black Adam character, it sounds like he’ll be doing much cooler things in more DC movies down the road.
