The gang’s all here! Well, most anyway. The first official trailer for Fast 8 AKA The Fate of the Furious (not The F8 of the Furious though, which is frankly RIDICULOUS) has dropped and it is as chock-full of crazy stunts and references to being a family as you might expect. In just the first 20 seconds the crew goes basically goes bowling, except with a massive wrecking ball and the cars that are in pursuit of their escape. All in a day’s work, right?
With the “retirement” of Paul Walker’s Brian (RIP) and Jordana Brewster’s Mia, the team is down a few cornerstone members, but they have continued on and now have to save the world from new villain Charlize Theron. Dom and Letty kick this movie off on their long-time-coming honeymoon, but it doesn’t take a genius to realize that their wedded bliss will be cut short one way or another in due time. Why can’t those two crazy kids just get to be happy!
According to the film’s official synopsis, Dom is seduced “into [a] world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him” and the team “will face trials that will test them as never before.” The team has been through a lot (a LOT) of trials that have tested them, so it’s really saying a lot if these are the worst they’ve ever faced. Charlize Theron seems like a great foe for the team on paper, and based on this first trailer her character will live up to that promise completely. According to the returning Kurt Russell, Theron’s character is “the very definition of high-tech terrorism” and at one point she makes out with Dom right in front of Letty. This better be a situation where Dom is under very deep cover for some unknown intelligence agency that everyone finds out about at the beginning of Fast 9, otherwise that scene is very upsetting and it’s unclear how Toretto can come back from that type of brutal behavior.
Anybody that can pull Dom away from his racing/crime-stopping family is someone that should be taken very seriously by the team and might be hard to take down without some serious collateral damage. The tagline for this film is “Family No More” which is not only incredibly ominous but means that it is going all in on Dom’s separation from the rest of the crew. The trailer doubles down on this rift and shows at least a handful of ways that Dom is betraying his team besides the aforementioned make out.
Whether the off-screen feud between The Rock and Vin Diesel was real or not (it was totally real), the on-screen separation between those two characters couldn’t be more clear. Dom runs Hobbs off the road in the very first clip, so this is a not-messing-around situation to be sure.
According to the synopsis, this movie will once again take place all around the world as previous installments have done. Announced locations include Cuba, New York City, and the Barents Sea which is in nestled between Norway and Russia. The trailer gives a look at that third location, in which the team is racing across a snow covered glacier while being shot at, only to have a gigantic submarine come up underneath them and chase them down the ice. The New York City location does give them the chance to do something absolutely nuts like drive cars off the Brooklyn Bridge and land them on a moving ferry or something. The possibilities are endless, but remember that each crazy set piece is just another reason that this film is going to win so many Oscars.
