Chris Pratt, the CGI raccoon, and the dancing tree got a lot of the attention when Guardians of the Galaxy came out this summer, but Karen Gillan also won over a ton of fans with her portrayal of Nebula, and Guardians writer/director James Gunn can certainly be counted among them.
In a new interview with Yahoo Movies UK, Gunn talks about his affection for the character (and the Doctor Who fan favorite actress who played her) and the possibility that we’ll see more of Nebula in the film’s upcoming sequel, which is scheduled for release on July 28, 2017.
“I love Nebula. I fell in love with the design of Nebula. I cast the role around that design. I fell in love with Karen [Gillan] as a person, and I love the character of Nebula. […]
“To me, she’s the Boba Fett of the movie. She’s the one that you really dig. She’s the cool one that we need to get more of. I hope to god that we get a chance to see a lot lot more of Nebula.”
Boba Fett is an interesting comparable for Nebula in that a lot of people feel that his coolness is magnified because of the relative small size of his role (one day, Disney may get around to testing that theory). Could that be the case with Nebula as well even though she’s already a more fleshed out character than Boba Fett is?
To me, Nebula should have a place in these films, but while people may be clamoring for more, there’s a balance that has to be respected as well. Is there enough there to sustain a deep exploration of the character and her motivations? It sounds like Gunn is at least interested in finding out.
