The first teaser trailer for Macbeth arrived today. Not to spoil it for you, but this trailer is dark. It’s also violent, moody, and full of whispers. This adaptation will not be a modern reimagining of Shakespeare’s bloodiest play, but it probably won’t be a by-the-book retelling either. Viewers will note the trailer’s aesthetic resemblance to HBO’s Game of Thrones for good reason.
Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard star as the murderous, power-hungry couple who descend into madness. As the trailer indicates, we don’t even need to see the play’s famous witches. These two actors are everything. Atmosphere is also a big selling point with the Scottish highlands acting as its own character.
Few have doubted whether Fassbender could pull off this tortured ruler. The wild card in Macbeth adaptations has always been the actress who plays Lady Macbeth. She’s the most fascinating character, the one who pulls the strings. Marion Cotillard owns this trailer. All of the ambition, obsession, and sleepless nights should be hers for the taking.
Macbeth arrives courtesy of The Weinstein Company and director Justin Kurtzel. There’s no U.S. release date yet, but this film has awards season written all over it.
