It seems like just a couple of weeks since the last time James Gunn had to deny a rumor about who Star-Lord’s dad is going to be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Oh wait, it was just a couple of weeks ago that Bradley Cooper got his aliens confused. (UPDATE: And Gunn has commented again, below.) Gunn has already said Chris Pratt’s character is going to have a different father than in the comics, and that his father’s identity will be revealed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We also know some people involved in the project know who it is, because Chris Pratt said he knows the identity and James Gunn’s pitch “legitimately put tears in my eyes.”
James Gunn has also said Marvel’s reaction to his pitch was along the lines of “Oh, whoa. That’s risky, but okay.” What name could elicit that reaction? Heroic Hollywood claims to know the answer. Potential spoilers ahead. We say “potential” because we’ve been burned before. It’s an interesting rumor, but not confirmed yet.
Heroic Hollywood says four sources who don’t know each other have all given him the same name: Captain Marvel. No, not the Carol Danvers version Marvel is doing a spin-off movie about. They’re talking about Mar-vell, the Silver Age version, which they explain in a video. Everything besides the name didn’t come from the four sources, so I won’t go into huge detail about those speculations (you can watch the video). The short version is, Mar-vell’s presence will be incorporated to explain Star-Lord’s parentage and tie the movie in with Captain Marvel and Inhumans.
Heroic Hollywood speculates that Mar-vell was the role Matthew McConaughey recently passed on. Hmm, they still need to cast it, do they? Is Glenn Howerton available to explain the birds and the space-bees to his estranged son?

UPDATE: James Gunn is sick of all these fake rumors, you guys.
