As a tie-in with the spanking new trailer for Suicide Squad, USA Today interviewed director David Ayer and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder about Jared Leto’s interpretation of the Joker, as well as his much-ballyhooed method acting.
Ayer admits people “kept their distance” from Leto on set, as he was always in character.
“It really made an event when he would show up on set. There was almost a pageantry to him, which did translate into the character and the power on screen he has.”
Leto even freaked out Ayer a few times. “Big time. The hairs stand up on the back of your neck.”
To quote commenter Shop 101 over at Film Drunk, “Theater majors gonna theater.”
Because it’s no longer a secret that Batman shows up in Suicide Squad, USA Today also interviewed Zack Snyder about Leto’s performance. He, of course, started out with the boilerplate quote about “commitment to the role” and finished with this still-not-sure-if-this-is-a-good-thing promise: “You’re going to get taken on a journey with Jared that I don’t know that everyone’s ready for, but I think it will be amazing.”
Y’all ain’t ready for this pageantry.
