In keeping with modern schools of superhero philosophy — namely that bigger is better and more is always more — virtually all of Marvel’s best and brightest are expected to band together in the studio’s forthcoming Avengers: Infinity War. In addition to the standard Avengers crew, heroes from Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as unintroduced characters like Captain Marvel, will be needed to save the world from its most serious threat to date. Doctor Strange is the studio’s next addition to its ever-growing cinematic world, but filmmakers have been completely silent on the Sorcerer Supreme’s role in the 2018 two-parter. However, Benedict Cumberbatch may have revealed his character’s appearance in the film during a recent interview.
When Empire (via Express) inquired about what the future holds for Doctor Strange, Cumberbatch began talking about the logistical difficulties of coordinating his schedule with those of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Elizabeth Olsen, and Paul Bettany — actors whose only link is Avengers: Infinity War. “To get us all together will be quite something. That’s why this character is being introduced, to open up the next chapter,” Cumberbatch said. “So watch this space to see how that unfolds.”
Cumberbatch was very specific as to the actors he mentions (who play Iron Man, Thor, Scarlet Witch and Vision, respectively), so his participation in Marvel’s star-studded blockbuster may be limited to a brief cameo. Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has hinted that Doctor Strange may also be making a cameo in his upcoming film, so it sounds like the Sorcerer Supreme is having no problems making his way around the Marvel Universe. Doctor Strange lands in theaters November 4.
