Ever since the announcement that Captain America: Civil War would be happening on the big screen, rumors have been swirling about which characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe are going to make an appearance. Now that the first trailer revealed details like which side of the battle Black Widow is on and why the war between Avengers kicked off in the first place, it’s time to speculate heavily about which other friends and enemies will be swinging by the scuffle. In one case, someone will be “swinging by” quite literally.
Contrary to everything the directors, producers, and stars are allowed to say publicly it looks as if Spidey will indeed be in the mix, but what about The Hulk or the other actors announced in secret roles? According to Entertainment Weekly, Robert Downey Jr. laid it all out on the table:
“[Don] Cheadle and I are just going, ‘Wow, dude, look at this.’ We’re now like the old guard, and our storyline carries real weight just because of our history in the [canon]. But we’re also looking around like, ‘Who thought that Falcon and Black Panther and Ant-Man and now Spider-Man…?’ I mean it’s like wow, this thing is just crazy.”
While that’s the answer to one burning question, but what about another? Namely the Hulk. Why isn’t he fighting for one side or the other in this film? It turns out there’s a simple reason according to the screenwriters:
“You put those guys in a fight, it’s over quickly. It’s like, ‘Well, we have the Hulk on our side.’ Oh, fine, then,” Markus says.
In Harry Potter terms, the Hulk is sort of like capturing the Golden Snitch in any conflict: Game over.
“Yeah, I guess we should just call this off,” McFeely says.
“You’ve got to kind of choose your roster depending on what kind of fight you want to have,” Markus adds.
Well that answers that question. There are still many others left in the air, though. Who is Martin Freeman playing? Will Daniel Bruhl be more or less disfigured than his character from Rush? Is there a chance Bucky and Cap will be an official couple by the end of the film? Audiences probably won’t get the answers to many of these questions in advance of opening day next year, but that won’t keep people from badgering the stars until then. Give us a hint, Chris!
