2 Chainz may have been out of the spotlight for a bit while rehabbing his broken leg, but it looks like he was using that time wisely. He just posted the above message to his social media, teasing the release of a new EP titled, intriguingly, The Play Don’t Care Who Makes It.
Chainz is a notorious sports fan who played basketball in high school before getting into the rap game, so borrowing an old coaching aphorism for an album title must have come naturally for him. By all accounts, he was also an above-average player and has taken a few opportunities to show off his game, even after trading his basketball career for a music one.
The Play Don’t Care Who Makes It is Chainz’ first solo project since 2017’s standout Pretty Girls Like Trap Music (is anyone else sensing a theme developing with the extra-long album titles?). As the promotional run for that album included not only themed merchandise like flower crowns but also community outreach and a standing art exhibit, perhaps he’ll dabble in some sporting or basketball-related marketing tactics for this one.
With the referee jersey on the cover, it seems like sports might end up being a theme on the album, at the very least. Since he’s captaining a team at Adidas’ NBA All-Star Weekend Celebrity Event, it would be a great opportunity to not only plug his album but also to put the lessons professional basketball skills coach Drew Hanlen has been giving him to good use.
