Leave it to a band that just announced its retirement to be the one that understands and appreciates the internet so much that they actually break ground in the linking of entertainment and web culture.

R.E.M. has unveiled a special GIF cover for their forthcoming greatest hits package, R.E.M., Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, 1982 – 2011, due out November 15th. It’s being billed as the “first-ever ” GIF album cover with the intent to “usher in a new era of album artwork.”
Additionally, the band posted a trailer for the 40-track greatest hits compilation on YouTube today. I may have to go ahead and pre-order it just as a show of appreciation for “getting it.”
