If you didn’t get the point from the recommendation in our mid-year recap, Nao is someone you need to be up on. The London singer manages to make futuristic R&B without making the all-too-common mistake of making it sound like it was made by soulless robots. “Bad Blood” from her upcoming debut album sounds like a song that Camille would make if she was a real person (and living in 2086 instead of 1986).
Far from the maximalist action-movie shtick of a certain other “Bad Blood” music video, Nao’s “Bad Blood” focuses on some sort of goddess/demon woman with the ability to put people into trances (and make trees grow out of their bodies). Truthfully, there’s no telling what is going on in this music video, which makes it a perfect companion to Nao’s smooth, space-funk. Much like the music, you have no idea what’s happening, but you can tell it’s art and that you really, really dig it.
If you need more Nao, seriously, check out her February 15 EP. And listen to her work on Disclosure’s sophomore album Caracal.
