If there is a lesson to be learned in 2016 — well, at least one of the many lessons of 2016 — it has to be that no matter what you do, if you are in the spotlight, people on Twitter are going to get upset about it. Sometimes Twitter gets up in arms over things that are deserved, while other times it’s a bit of a grey area and a seemingly innocuous story about a gorilla turns into one of 2016’s biggest stories thanks to social media outrage. Right now singer Demi Lovato is facing a bit of backlash, but not over something that she said, instead just kind of laughing at her drunken mother.
According to The Huffington Post, Twitter is currently having a party with the hashtag #DemiLovatoIsOverParty thanks to her mother’s drunken snapchat video that Lovato was laughing at via social media on Friday. The video, which features Lovato’s mother, Dianna Hart, shows her seemingly intoxicated speaking about the Rio Olympics.
“Everybody down in Rio gonna get the Zika virus.”
Although it did sound a lot more like; “Eeeeerebady down in Rio gun-uh get tha Zee-ka viiiie-rus.” Lovato can be heard laughing in the background, which, according to Lovato had to do with how “Southern” her mother sounded. It does sound kind of funny, doesn’t it?
In no way did I mean to offend anyone last night. I was laughing at how southern my mom sounded, not the issue at hand. Deepest apologies.

So no, Lovato doesn’t consider herself to be “over” by any stretch of the imagination and claims that she was just laughing at how silly her mother sounded. Twitter had a very different reaction to the video, though.

Although the hashtag has been overtaken by Demi Lovato fans supporting her, thus sort of flooding Twitter with the inverse.

Twitter is really weird, right? It seems like Lovato has survived this bit of an outrage. For now.
