At this point, FKA twigs is known as well for her intricate, twisting dance numbers at her concerts as she is for her albums full of disjointed, sexy and uncomfortable tunes. So when word got out that she was hosting a free dance workshop in Baltimore back in July, a ton of fans showed up to dance alongside her. That experience was captured in the new documentary short titled Baltimore Dance Project, which can be viewed here.
Though some of the dancers did end up being tagged by twigs to perform with her at her Baltimore show, during the workshop the singer stressed that it was not a competition.
“Nobody cares whether you get routines right or wrong, whether your favorite move goes to plan or it doesn’t,” she said.
She added that she viewed the workshop as a way to push back against negative forces in the outside world.
“In the world, especially at the moment, there’s so much tension, so much angst, and so much misunderstanding,” she said. “I just believe through music and art and being creative and expressing ourselves as young people, it’s really important that we’re able to break those barriers, because we’re going to be the next people making this world a safe place. When things are difficult, art always flourishes.”
