James Corden has had a stellar 2016. Even if the rest of aren’t having a great year, there’s no way anyone could begrudge Corden’s massive success, he’s too likable and funny and talented for that. So the news reported by Variety this morning that he will be hosting next years Grammy awards makes perfect sense given his upward trajectory. Plus, Corden has already dominated the music space this year with his wildly successful Carpool Karaoke show, which has featured everyone from Justin Bieber to Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, Madonna and now even Bruno Mars.
People stood up and took notice of Corden’s commuter show — it racked up a ton of awards at this year’s Creative Emmys, even upsetting the Beyhive for beating out Lemonade. Additionally, he hosted this year’s Tony awards, so he already has experience in the award show game.
Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow told Variety that he couldn’t be more excited to have Corden host:
“Thanks to ‘Carpool Karaoke,’ we’ve all been on some incredible rides with James, and The Recording Academy couldn’t be more excited to welcome his passion and enthusiasm for music, both as an entertainer and a fan, to the Grammy stage on February 12. He’s got big shoes to fill after the magnificent run we had with LL Cool J, but James Corden is a commanding, dynamic showman who, we believe, is perfect to host the Grammy Awards.”
Corden also shared his gratitude at the honor: “I am truly honored to be hosting The Grammys next year,” he said. “It’s the biggest, most prestigious award show in music and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such an incredible night.”
Finally, Grammys executive producer Ken Ehrlich also sang Corden’s praises:
“James Corden is a captivating host, and I have no doubt that his musical background, personal charm and comedic instincts will resonate with our audience. For the past five years, we’ve been fortunate to have had LL Cool J host our show, and I trust that James will bring the same professionalism and charisma to Music’s Biggest Night.”
The Grammys will be held on February 12, 2017 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. They’ll be broadcast live at 5PM PST/8 PM EST.
