Late in 2015 I heard a song that made my whole year. It was called “Loudspeaker,” by an LA-based female pop trio named MUNA. The song, a glittering but gloomy anthem of music as self-affirmation, and it stuck with me. After listening to the rest of the group’s initial EP I knew they were something special. For Stereogum, the site I worked for at the time, I profiled them as a rising band to watch. Damn, do I love being right.
Since our conversation, MUNA have signed with RCA and will release their debut albumAbout U in early 2017 — February 3 to be exact. As a prelude to that, today they shared “I Know A Place,” another song that finds solace in the safety of music, dance, and relationship. One of the things I love the most about lead singer Katie Gavin’s voice is the way she bends words into whatever shape suits her meaning. All three girls produce what they call their “dark pop” sound together, Gavin on production and vocals, Josette Maskin on lead guitar and Naomi McPherson on rhythm guitar, synths, and production.
On “I Know A Place” the three spin the same kind of empathetic, hypnotizing synth-pop that made their Loudspeaker EP so compelling. Listen above, and get ready to hear them everywhere. Oh and stream Loudspeaker EP below if you haven’t heard it yet — I also can’t recommend “Winterbreak” enough.
