Last week, Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer wrote about Carolina Panthers linebacker Ben Jacobs and his obsession with “Creedbombing“—the act of singing Creed lyrics intensely at others while maintaining uncomfortable eye contact.
Turns out, Creed lead singer Scott Stapp is a fan of the Panthers, but not in a bandwagon-y sense.
“I’ve been cheering for these guys so hard,” Stapp told Jones. “I had to move my tour bus like five different places so I could get reception and watch (the NFC Championship game) the other night. I’m so fired up and pumped up for these guys. They are my team right now.”
Stapp found about Creedbombing by reading the Observer‘s story. Though he’s a Crimson Tide fan for life, Stapp said he admires Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, an Auburn grad. Stapp is also, not surprisingly, big on Creedbombing the daylights out of people:
“Like, are you serious? This is so cool,” Stapp said. “And I just felt like, hey man, there are Creed fans on the Panthers?”
But then he took a step back and realized how funny it is to look directly into someone’s eyes and unleash a Creed lyric out of nowhere.
“I just started dying laughing,” Stapp said. “And then the next thing you know, my band is doing it to me out on tour. And I saw the humor in it and saw how funny it was. I think it’s awesome.”
A lot of people are vocal about disliking Creed, but hey, if you can have staying power for decades on end—regardless of people’s intent—then you’re certainly memorable. Creed and Stapp have that going for them.
And if you need more proof that Creedbombing can be devastating, Ben Jacobs unleashed the fury on a Panthers staffer at Wednesday’s practice:
