This Turkish Composer Is Taking Nirvana Classical To Celebrate Kurt Cobain’s Birthday

Kurt Cobain’s birthday is Saturday, February 20, and the late, beloved lead singer of Nirvana would have been 49. In the wake of his death, a litany of artists have paid homage to him and his iconic songbook. You will find plenty of rock bands who fashioned their sound after Nirvana doing covers of their songs, but there are artists who are fans of Nirvana and Cobain that you might not expect. One of them is Turkish composer AyseDeniz Gokcin.

While Gokcin is a pianist, and a classical musician, she is still a fan of Nirvana, and so she decided to pay homage to the world’s preeminent grunge band by taking some of their songs and turning them into an album of classical covers. In an interview with BBC News, Gokcin discussed why she decided to do this, and also you can see some clips of her renditions of Nirvana songs.

However, you don’t have to settle for those smattering of clips. You can watch video of her “variations” on “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are” on YouTube. Additionally, she has done her takes on musicians such as Pink Floyd and Michael Jackson as well. Or, if you’d like to see this classical pianist actually play, you know, classical music, that’s an option too.
