For the first time since the release of Flower Boy, Tyler, The Creator sat down for a full interview about the album’s creation and motivations with none other than standup comedian Jerrod Carmichael, whose HBO special 8 was one of the best of 2017. Carmichael doesn’t hesitate before jumping into the heavy first question: “This album, when I first heard it, and the more I hear it, I feel like the only appropriate question to ask you after listening to it is, are you ok?”
The hour-long chat was directed by Tyler’s alter ego Wolf Haley, who makes some interesting composition choices in the construction of the interview, from placing the duo in furry chairs in front of a faux desert background to formulating the interview as an extra close-up split-screen affair. In some ways, it looks more like an interview on the Eric Andre Show than anything else. As it would turn out, Carmichael is a great interviewer and is quick to make Tyler comfortable enough to candidly share the stories behind the creation of one of the most impressive albums of 2017. Check out the full interview above.
Flower Boy is nominated for the Best Rap Album award at the Grammys, which will take place this Sunday 1/28 in New York City, and Tyler will embark on a co-headlining tour alongside Vince Staples shortly thereafter.
