And the hits just keep on coming for ESPN’s top personalities.
First, Bill Simmons. Then, Keith Olbermann. Now, radio host Colin Cowherd. According to Ryan Glasspiegel of the Big Lead, Cowherd is leaving ESPN and possibly headed to Fox Sports. The move means a reunion of Cowherd with his ol’ pal and SportsNation producer Jamie Horowitz, who joined Fox after an unsuccessful stint on the Today show.
ESPN President John Skipper released this statement to the Big Lead:
“We’ve enjoyed a mutually beneficial run with Colin for over a decade. He came to national prominence on ESPN with his unique perspective on sports and society. Endings also bring new beginnings, for ESPN and Colin, and we thank him and wish him the best.”
So, how about the future of ESPN radio? They’ve already moved one of their more popular hosts, Scott Van Pelt, to SportsCenter, and with Cowherd out the door, that leaves Mike and Mike alone at the top. With all due respect to Jorge Sedano and Dan Le Batard, neither move the needle quite like Cowherd.
It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out for ESPN.
As for Cowherd, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the same role as Mike Francesa with a simulcast on FS1.
