Roger Goodell is not in attendance for tonight’s NFL season opener between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers in Foxboro. It’s a strange move considering that the commissioner traditionally attends the season opener, but Goodell decided to pass on making the trip to Gillette Stadium this year. According to the NFL’s commissioner, his decision was made because he doesn’t want the night to be about him and Patriots QB Tom Brady, who don’t exactly have the best relationship right now.
Despite this, it’s probably fair to assume that Goodell decided he didn’t want to go because he knew that Patriots fans would spend the entire night saying some of the nastiest things you can imagine to him. For the most part, Pats fans ignored Goodell, mostly because their team is beating the Steelers and they have much bigger fish to fry. But in the fourth quarter, the fans in Gillette decided to call out the commissioner with a really loud “Where is Roger?” chant. Even NBC’s Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth acknowledged the fans’ reaction, with Michaels asking where Goodell would go if he attended and Collinsworth joking that he’d be put right in the middle of the crowd.
Safe to say, Goodell probably made the right decision staying home.
