Al Golden Has Finally Been Fired By The University Of Miami

Well, it looks like those banners have finally paid off.

Miami Hurricanes’ head coach Al Golden was let go by the university on Sunday, one day after his team sustained the worst loss in program history, a 58-0 beating at the hands of the Clemson Tigers. After the game, several former ‘Canes took to the web to voice their displeasure about the state of the program and it didn’t take long for Hurricanes’ Athletic Director Blake James to make the decision. Current tight ends coach Larry Scott will take over head coaching duties for the remainder of the season.

Since he arrived at Miami in late 2010, Al Golden has had a tough challenge, as he was tasked with bringing a former college powerhouse back to the top and quickly found himself under scholarship reductions that are still in effect thanks to the actions of a former booster during 2002-2010. The shocking scandal was detailed by Yahoo! Sports. Miami was under a self-imposed bowl ban his first two seasons due to that same scandal.

In his time at the helm, the Hurricanes have gone 32-25 since the start of the 2011 season but failed to beat conference rival Florida State even once, going 0-5 against the Seminoles despite fielding several NFL draft picks each year. Whoever takes the job next has a similarly tough task ahead of them, as it’s become clear in recent years the school does not take the football program as seriously as it once did. Former players and fans that hope the ‘Canes will return to the level of Alabama, USC and FSU are probably going to be waiting for a long time to see that happen.
