Less than 24 hours after the “head kick heard ’round the world,” Ronda Rousey has spoken. The former (wow that sounds weird) UFC bantamweight champ took to Instagram to tell fans she was “fine.” Perhaps more of a hit to her ego than anything else.
This time off has been mentioned before, and there’s talk that Rousey could take as much as six months away from UFC to work on various movie projects (among other things). So this doesn’t come as a surprise. The fact it came after a loss, however, is a shock and might throw a few wrinkles into that six month hiatus.
Both Dana White and newly crowned champ Holly Holm have already spoken about a possible rematch.
White:
“Obviously we don’t make fights the night of the fight, but the rematch makes a lot of sense,” White said at the post-fight press conference. “I think the rematch is what people would want to see. [Holm’s victory] changes a lot of things; the Cyborg fight, some other stuff we were working on.”
Holm:
“I think a rematch makes sense for sure. I’ve been on a losing side of a fight and I wanted the rematch; I wanted to avenge my loss,” Holm said. “With a champion like Ronda who has gone out of her way, above and beyond to do great things, absolutely she deserves a rematch.
As for Rousey’s health, it appears as if the injuries were relatively minor, a severe cut to the lip that might require plastic surgery. Rumors of a broken jaw spread late Saturday night into the morning but were quickly shot down by UFC president Dana White.
